Richard
Montoya has been painting traditional retablos since he was a boy,
and has become well known through the years. Montoya is a
part-time artist and Medical Social Worker who specializes in
Geriatrics and in the area of Death and Dying. He has lived in the
Santa Cruz and Espanola Valley all his life.
Montoya paints
Hispanic folk art of Christian images painted on wood known as
Retablos or tablets. He feels that his art is not a way of giving
back to his, culture, because it is vastly rejected by his own
people, Hispanics. He says that they are exposed to it all their
life and take it for granted . He does this type of art to make
people in other cultures aware of the Hispanic culture.
