Theresa Montoya 
Theresa Montoya has been painting Retablos since 1986 . A regular contributing artist at the New Mexico Spanish Market, she has also taught classes on the art of retablo creation for many diverse organizations.  These organizations include: the SEED Program; Espanola Artist Council; the New Mexico Spanish Market; public schools throughout New Mexico; Santa Cruz de la Canada Youth Group and upon request to private individuals. In 1987, Theresa, her husband Richard and their three children Ricky, Melissa and Daniel started to paint retablos for their own gallery. Theresa’s enthusiasm for painting retablos is shown throughout her work; "When I paint retablos I feel like the past is coming to life before my eyes...with each brush stroke I am thankful I have been blessed with the ability to share my culture with others."

Theresa’s Art Gallery & Studio provides local authentic Spanish Colonial Folk Art. We provide an artistic outlet in hopes of keeping the art alive for next generations to appreciate and pass on. We provide a place where thirty to forty local artist can exhibit there work year round. Theresa and Richard Montoya have taught numerous Retablo classes through different programs of Educational, private tours and have over two hundred retablos for sale, the largest collection in New Mexico. Theresa and Richard participated in the Spanish Market in Santa Fe with their Spanish Colonial Folk art of Retablo painting for over 15 years. They also provide their national recognized retablos to other gift shops and museums. Featured artists at Spanish Folk art Museums, Smithsonian at Washington D.C. and private collections. Theresa’s gallery has been a place where private tours out of Santa Fe have chosen her gallery. Where visitors have described there visit their as one of the most valuable places they visited. A place where they acquired knowledge of the local art. In addition, has enabled the university students to understand and respect the unique cultures of northern New Mexico. Photos of her shop and work have been used to promote New Mexico travel in magazines and brochures.

Theresa’s gallery is an also a consignment gallery, providing artist with an outlet to show their artistic talents and their work exposed to buyers from out of state. To where they are connected to other galleries and museums in order to garner greater exposure and fair market prices for their artwork. Theresa’s art gallery was selected as the Community Business Spirit Award in 2006 by WESST corp. This award entailed the commitment Theresa has expressed in helping local artist and providing an outlet for them to show their art. It also helps with the local economy providing artist with a way to make money selling their art. Where up to forty artists are showing their art year round. In 2007, Theresa was awarded the Entrepreneur award for the state of New Mexico and in 2009 selected as New Mexico women Making a Difference Leadership in the arts.

Mission Statement: Theresa’s Art Gallery strives in keeping our culture and art alive through the generations and sharing with the world a part of New Mexico one piece at a time.
